Russia Launches Major Missile and Drone Strikes Across Ukraine
Russia launched one of its larger combined missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, targeting more than a dozen regions simultaneously. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that a strike on a residential building in Pryluky killed four children and described it as among the most vile attacks from Moscow's forces. The overall death toll from the strikes stood at at least 24 civilians. Zelenskyy had warned hours before the assault that a large-scale attack was being prepared.
The strikes came on or around Vladimir Putin's birthday, prompting Zelenskyy and Western officials to describe the timing as deliberate. The attack hit infrastructure and residential areas across a wide arc of Ukrainian territory, reflecting Russia's continued strategy of targeting civilian areas to degrade morale and energy infrastructure. EU sanctions were simultaneously expanded to cover a record 1,600 additional Russian citizens and entities, bringing the total sanctioned to nearly 4,650.
The strikes have renewed pressure on Western allies to accelerate air-defense deliveries to Ukraine. The International Energy Agency moved in parallel to release strategic diesel reserves, including an expected 100 million barrels, partly in response to disruptions linked to the broader conflict. The war shows no sign of de-escalation, with Russia also conducting ongoing cyberattacks and sabotage operations against NATO-adjacent states such as Denmark, and drone attacks intensifying in the Black Sea near Bulgaria and Romania.
