Ukraine-Russia War Escalates with Largest Drone Strikes on Moscow

Ukraine carried out one of the largest drone attacks of the war against Moscow and surrounding regions overnight, with Russian authorities reporting hundreds of drones intercepted and at least six fatalities in Moscow and the Rostov region. The Ukrainian military also struck a military-industrial facility in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky in Russia's Rostov oblast, which produces solid propellant for rocket and missile systems. Separately, a suspected Russian drone was shot down over Romanian airspace by a NATO F-18 fighter jet — the fourth such incident over Romanian territory since late July — raising fresh alarm within the alliance about spillover from the conflict.

Russia responded with strikes across Ukraine, killing at least three people and injuring more than ten. North Korea's Kim Jong Un meanwhile reaffirmed deepening ties with Vladimir Putin on Korean Liberation Day, as intelligence agencies reported Pyongyang may be preparing to send up to 50,000 additional troops to bolster Russian forces, a development Western governments are monitoring closely.

The mutual escalation marks a significant intensification of the conflict, with both sides targeting infrastructure deep inside each other's territory. The shooting down of a Russian drone over NATO member Romania — and the alliance's public confirmation — raises the stakes for potential Article 5 considerations, while the possible deployment of tens of thousands of North Korean troops could materially alter the balance on the front lines in coming months.
