US-Iran Military Escalation: Strikes, Gulf Attacks, Nuclear Site Hit
The United States military has launched airstrikes against Iran for eight consecutive nights, with the latest round targeting Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in retaliation for an Iranian attack on a US base in Jordan that killed two American service members, left one missing, and hospitalized four others. US Central Command described the strikes as designed to "swiftly punish" the IRGC. Among the targets struck was the Darkhovin nuclear power plant construction site in southern Iran, which Tehran's atomic energy agency condemned as a violation of international law.
Iran has responded with a broad campaign of missile and drone strikes against Gulf states. Bahrain activated nationwide warning sirens as Iranian projectiles were launched toward Gulf targets. Kuwait reported that a power generation and water desalination plant was attacked for the second consecutive day. Iran also announced it would no longer abide by the memorandum of understanding signed with the US in June, a deal that had produced a brief interim ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz has been a flashpoint, with Iran's Revolutionary Guard reporting incidents involving vessels in the waterway and two ships turning back after receiving warnings.
The escalation is rapidly eroding the diplomatic framework that had temporarily paused hostilities. President Trump said he "couldn't care less" about Iran abandoning the MoU. Sixteen American service members have now been killed since the conflict began in late February. Iran's power grid, already battered by chronic underinvestment, has been further degraded by the strikes, leaving millions of Iranians facing blackouts during a heatwave. The crisis is reverberating globally through oil markets, shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, and alarm among US allies in the Gulf region about the risk of broader regional war.
